Introduction

This Guide has been created for Year 10 Specialist PE studying the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

The aim of this Guide is for you to be able to:

  • Define and describe the functions of the circulatory system
  • Compare Arteries, Veins and capillaries
  • Describe the components of blood (Plasma, Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets)
  • Describe the path that blood takes through the body including all chambers and blood vessels (no name of valves needed)
  • Give reasoning behind the reasons for having two circulatory systems (Systemic and Pulmonary)
  • Define blood pressure and explain what ventricular contraction and relaxation is
  • Identify parts of the circulatory and respiratory system (able to label)
  • Justify and define the mechanics of inhalation and exhalation (pressure of lungs, ribs, intercostal muscles, diaphragm)
  • Summarise the Acute and Chronic responses to exercise

Cardiorespiratory system

  • The circulatory system and the respiratory system combined form the cardiorespiratory system.
  • The circulatory system consists of the heart and blood vessels.
  • The respiratory system consists of the lungs and air passages.
  • The systems work hand in hand to provide the body with nutrients and oxygen as well as in the removal of waste products such as carbon dioxide from the body.
